[ Chapter 2 · Understanding AI in everyday work ]
The AI already around you
3 min read
A common mistake is to think "AI at work" means deliberately opening ChatGPT. In reality, AI reached your workplace years before chatbots did, and it keeps arriving silently through updates to tools you already use.
Where it already sits
- Your inbox: spam filtering, priority sorting, suggested replies, sentence completion.
- Your meetings: automatic transcription, AI-written summaries and action items in Teams, Zoom, or Meet.
- Your documents: grammar and style suggestions, translation, "help me write" buttons appearing inside office suites.
- Your searches: AI-generated answer boxes above the classic results.
- Your phone: photo sorting, voice assistants, keyboard predictions.
- Your company's systems: CV screening in recruiting tools, fraud scoring in finance tools, chatbots answering your customers.
Why does recognizing this matter for safety? Because the risks of AI apply wherever AI is, not just in chatbot windows. If your videoconference tool transcribes and summarizes a confidential meeting, that transcript now exists somewhere and is governed by that vendor's terms. If a recruiting tool ranks candidates, someone should be checking it for bias. You cannot manage risks you have not noticed.
